Members of the military and certain other federal employees serving outside the US were given a 1 year extension, until April 30, 2011, to buy a home and still qualify. So if you thought you had missed out on the tax credit there’s still an opportunity to take advantage of this tax credit of up to $8,000.
Based on the purchase price of your home, the credit is either 10% of the purchase price OR $8.000, whichever is the lesser amount. For example on a $150,000 home purchase, 10% of that figure is $15,000 so the $8,000 top limit would apply. You would have to buy a home for less than $80,000 to get less than the full $8000, pretty hard to do in most markets around the country.
